Dear Families, September 2017 Please use this reading log over the course of every week to write down the items your child has read, turn it in on Friday, and a new log will come home on Friday afternoon. Please remember that READING is READING. Students in first grade learn to READ the pictures and tell the story through the pictures. They learn to READ the words and tell the story through the words of the author. They learn to READ the story through RETELL as they retell the story to themselves or to another person in their own words. Ways to READ with your child and fill out this log: Read a recipe together Read road signs together as you drive (this works really well to teach left and right also) Read menus at restaurants Read on-level books together Read above level books to them Read words or pictures together wherever you find them (“Tell me what you think is happening in this picture”) Have your child read to a younger or older sibling Visit the library and listen to stories Books on tape/audio/cd listened to with or without a book Let me know if you need help with this. Enjoy the READ! Our goal is to create a love for the written word. Together we can make this happen. It takes a village, Mrs. Mulvihill
